The Impact of Tooth Loss

And How Dental Implants Can Help
Losing a tooth can affect more than just your smile. It may impact your ability to chew comfortably, influence your self-esteem, and even affect your overall oral health and wellbeing. The long-term effects can vary depending on which teeth are lost, but common issues include bone loss in the jaw and shifting of surrounding teeth. Over time, these changes can make everyday tasks like eating and speaking more difficult.
At Smile Spot Mawson Lakes, we offer dental implants as a long-lasting solution to missing teeth. Implants replace both the root and visible portion of the tooth, creating a strong, stable foundation that integrates with your jawbone and looks completely natural.
Whether you’re missing a single tooth or several, dental implants can restore function, prevent further oral health issues, and give you back the confidence to smile and enjoy the foods you love.

What is a dental implant?
A dental implant functions as an artificial tooth root, surgically placed into the jawbone to support a replacement tooth or teeth. Once restored with a dental crown, bridge, or even a full denture, it offers a secure and long-term solution for one or more missing teeth.
Implants are made from strong, biocompatible materials—typically titanium—that are well accepted by the body. The placement procedure is relatively straightforward and, for many patients, no more complex than a routine tooth extraction.
After the implant is placed, it remains beneath the gum tissue during a healing phase. During this time, the surrounding bone gradually fuses with the implant in a process known as osseointegration. This natural bonding process helps create a solid and stable foundation.
Once healing is complete, a small connector (called an abutment) is attached to the implant, which will hold the final restoration in place—whether that’s a crown, bridge, or denture.
Dental implants not only restore the appearance and function of your teeth, but also help prevent bone loss and maintain the natural alignment of your bite.
